Vegan and Cruelty Free Products Part 4

IV.           Household Products

Here is the fourth and last part of my post about vegan and cruelty free products, but I might be adding some more. We will see how it goes 😉 So we covered cosmetics, face and body care, hair care and also feminine products. In this post we will cover household products.

There is no secret that many cleaning products contain harmful ingredients. You can be using gloves to protect yourself but is it enough? How about an air you are breathing while cleaning? Are your cleaning products safe?  No one can avoid exposure to toxic chemicals altogether, but it is possible to reduce it significantly. You can’t avoid exposure outside your home but you can inside your house. Many cleaning product at your supermarket proclaims itself “green,” “natural” or “biodegradable,” that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s nontoxic. Choose less toxic ones or make your own. There are many DIY recipes online – make your own formulas with baking soda, vinegar and essential oils. It’s up to you. My choice is always cruelty free and vegan.

Here is interesting article about toxins in cleaning products and healthier replacements: http://experiencelife.com/article/8-hidden-toxins-whats-lurking-in-your-cleaning-products/

At the moment I’m using mostly products from DM Drogeriemarkt, because they are cruelty free and vegan (not all but I have some stuff to choose from):

DM Drogeriemarkt

washing-up liquid:

http://washing up liquidwww.dm.de/de_homepage/denkmit_home/produkte/produkte_kueche/produkte_kueche_handgeschirrspuelmittel/11796/denkmit-spuelmittel-nature.html

all purpose cleaner: http://www.dm.de/de_homepage/denkmit_home/produkte/produkte_kueche/produkte_kueche_reiniger/12124/denkmit-allzweckreiniger-limette.html

washing powder:

http://www.dm.de/de_homepage/denkmit_home/produkte/produkte_waschen/produkte_waschen_spezialwaschmittel/10556/denkmit-black-sensation.html

These are what I might consider to buy if I will be lazy to make my own 😉 I would love to continue buying Faith in Nature products but they don’t sell them in any shop in Austria. So I might consider buying Alma Win or Sonett.

FAITH IN NATURE

http://www.faithinnature.co.uk/Household-Cleansing/C/7

ALMA WIN

Alma Win began life in 1993 manufacturing environmentally friendly organic laundry, dishwashing and cleaning products that can be tolerated by the skin and are in harmony with man and nature. Alma Win products are all paraben and petrochemical free & are made from natural ingredients

http://www.pravera.co.uk/alma-win-natural-cleanliness

SONETT

Sonett is one of the pioneers of ecological laundry detergents and cleaners. Sonett products incorporate no ingredients which could be environmentally hazardous, a danger to health or which trigger allergies. All ingredients are completely biodegradable. Sonett uses only vegetable and mineral raw materials (apart from the cow gall used in gall soap).

Summary

If you are concern about what you are putting into your body you should not stop there. Now turn your attention to what you put on your skin and also don’t forget cleaning products. Try using as minimum chemicals as possible. Choose Natural, Organic and Vegan products. Careful also with natural cosmetics just because the name of the products says so doesn’t mean that it is true.  Do your research! And don’t be afraid to ask questions.

III.            Feminine products

For all the ladies there be aware of the products you are using during those special days. I’m sure many of you heard or read something about chemicals in tampons and pads, so if you are not willing to stop using them, choose the safer and healthier alternative. For more information about the danger in feminine hygiene products please read this: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-mercola/feminine-hygiene-products_b_3359581.html

It’s not the first article which I came across with this subject. So if you really care about your overall health you should be careful what you are putting in your body and also on your body.

So here are the products which I’m using myself:

NATRACAREnatracare

Natracare stands for more than just organic and natural products. We are an award winning, ethical company committed to offering organic and natural solutions for personal health care that leave a soft footprint on the earth out of respect for our future generations. For all of our feminine hygiene and baby care products, we use only organic and natural materials that meet the highest organic, environmental and biodegradable standards, sourced from raw material producers that manage and monitor resources respectfully and share our principles.

MOONCUPmooncup

The Mooncup Made from soft medical grade silicone, the Mooncup is latex-free and contains no dyes, BPA, toxins or bleaches. It’s also great for women with sensitive skin. Tampons can cause dryness and leave fibres behind. The Mooncup is designed to respect your natural balance. It comes in two sizes and it is the most economical sanitary product you can buy.

http://www.mooncup.co.uk/

Washing your intimate area

And if it comes to cleaning intimate area the best thing is to use clean water.  Believe me your inside is cleaning itself. If there are any irregularities with the smell or discharge it usually means that the inner aura is in imbalance. The cause can be increase of stress, unhealthy diet or infection. The best prevention is to stay healthy and keep it clean and dry. No soap or any other irritants and also avoid scented sanitary products. For best comfort wear bio cotton underwear. If you think that you have and infection consult with doctor – Better safe than sorry.

Vegan and Cruelty Free Products Part 2

II.            Hair care and Hair Dye

Having a good quality shampoo is very important because we want to look good and also feel good. And the product what we are using is in direct contact with our skin and many times also with eyes. And don’t forget that a healthy diet rich in vitamins and nutrients will give you gorgeous hair, skin and also nails. Take care of your hair with good care because it is representing you.

I’m using only shampoo, conditioner and hair dye. And most of the time I’m not even using hairdryer. I’m trying to keep it simple. For those who are using styling gel or spray , choose something what is more friendly to your hair and of course cruelty free. 😉

SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER

Currently I’m using shampoos from Faith in Nature and I’m 100% satisfied with them. Their products are organic, BUAV approved and vegan.

FAITH IN NATURE

Faith in Nature produces several ranges of natural beauty and skin care products that are both chemical and animal cruelty free, plus a household cleaning products. Free from synthetic coloring and fragrances, with no SLES, SLS and Parabens, Faith In Nature offers a truly natural experience. • They sell: Hair Care, Bath&Shower Gels, Soaps&Hand washes, Skin Care, Wipes & Deodorants, Household Cleansing, Feminine Products & Baby Range

HAIR DYE

So after I became vegan I tried to also search for more natural way to color my hair. I love my red hair so I tried many different hair dyes to get the color I want.

I was trying to switch to more natural dye – henna, but I didn’t get my desirable red color. Using henna it’s also more time consuming and little bit messier. I was reading that it is possible to get intensive red hair, but you need to be more patient. … unfortunately I’m not so here is what I’m using now , also in pic.

NATURTINT

Permanent Hair Colorant with Active Vegetable Ingredients. No ammonia, parabens or resorcinol – dermatologically tested. Covers 100% grey and can lighten up to 2 shades at a time. Enriched with Soya, Corn, Coconut and Wheat Extracts. Selected natural & organically approved & certified ingredients Naturtint hair color products are manufactured to the very highest international standards using ecofriendly, biodegradable packaging. They are also suitable for vegans and against animal testing.

Herbatint

Herbatint is a hair color that’s less harsh (fewer chemicals, no ammonia, no SLS and  paraben-free), balanced with plant extracts and herbs. They have all the basic shades in permanent and semi and a couple earthy, edgier shades too.

Henna based Hair Dyes:

LUSH carries henna bars in red, brown, and black tones.

Sante Herbal Hair Color Free from synthetic colorants, fragrance and preservatives. Vegan plant powder with organic henna extract.

DRY SHAMPOO

For times without water or without hot water or just for extra freshness between washes.

Batiste, Superdrug and Lush are all vegan friendly brands.

SHAVING

And let’s not forget about how to get rid of unwanted hair :D. So how to shave the vegan and cruelty-free way.

In Uk I was using mostly products from Superdrug and now in Vienna I’m returning back to products of Balea from DM Drogeriemarkt:

http://www.dm.de/de_homepage/balea_home/balea_produkte/balea_produkte_enthaarung/balea_produkte_enthaarung_rasurvorbereitung/198196/balea-nature-rasierschaum.html

And on peta I found two cruelty-free companies with electric razors. My husband is using a Philips one and he is 100% satisfied.

Month Three, Day Thirteen

day 61

My training log for today

Ok here we are again:) As usually I did Jillian’s and Bob’s workout in the morning and Zwow in the afternoon.  I’m really getting bored with Jillian’s one. It is not because it’s not challenging enough I’m just bored to death. But on other hand I enjoy Bob’s workout it’s super short and the moves are simple but challenging. 🙂 And of course I’m always looking forward to new Zwow. 😉

Morning workout:

Jillian Michaels 6 week six-pack abs workout – level 1 using 3 kg dumbbell

Bob Harper’s Totally Ripped Core – 12 min bonus  using 3 kg dumbbell

Afternoon workout:

ZWOW #57 – Do Not Throw Up! Time Challenge

10 reps  Burpees
15 reps  Jump Lunge
20 reps  Push Up
30 reps Mountain Climbers
40 reps Air Squats
Your goal is to complete 4 rounds in less than 15 minutes or as fast as you can while keeping an excellent form.

Zuzana’s time: 17 min and 51 sec.

This ZWOW seemed easy, there are only 5  pretty basic body-weight exercises. But when you hear Zuzka on the video saying that even she is afraid of this one … you start to get worried yourself. It was killer! I wasn’t sick during or afterwards. But I could definitely feel my legs. I thought that the Jump lunges will be the worst one because I hate them but surprisingly the push up where the tough one.

My time:

17.7.2013: 16 min and 30 sec

Month Three, Day Twelve

day 60

My training log for today

Today I was concentrating more on my blog. First I did my morning workout, had my breakfast and then I was working on my post in vegan lifestyle section. I managed to finished part one and I’m already working on the next one. 🙂  And in the afternoon I did on of the Zwows.

Morning workout:

Jillian Michaels 6 week six-pack abs workout – level 1 using 3 kg dumbbell

Bob Harper’s Totally Ripped Core – 12 min bonus  using 3 kg dumbbell

Afternoon workout:

ZWOW #56 – 8 minute AMRAP Power Cardio Workout

Set your interval timer for 16 rounds of 2 intervals. The firs interval is 5 seconds, and the second interval is 25 seconds. This means that you have to push at max effort during each 25 second interval and you have only 5 seconds to switch to the next exercise.

1) High Knees with Jump Rope – 25 seconds of max effort

2) Squat Press with Dumbbells (I used 10lbs= 4.5kg)

3) High Knees with Jump Rope

4) Dumbbell Rows – Do 2 reps in the standing bend over position and then go down into a plank and do one row with each arm. Stand up and repeat as many times as possible during the 25 second interval.

5) High Knees With Jump Rope

6) Jump Lunge & Twist with 1 Dumbbell

7) High Knee with Jump Rope

8) One Leg Toe Touch Push Up

There was not really time to write down my reps so I was only concentrating on my form and I was pushing myself really hard. I was using 4 kg dumbbells

DEODORANT – Body Sprays, Roll On

What to avoid when buying deodorants:

The main ingredient used in most antiperspirants is aluminum. Aluminum is a metal, which is helping to block the sweat from escaping the pores. Aluminum has been linked to breast cancer in women and has also been linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Learn more: http://www.naturalnews.com/033364_deodorants_chemical_ingredients.html#ixzz2ZCuaimvc

Try more natural versions and don’t forget that what you put into your body has huge effect on your body odor. If you eat bad quality, unhealthy food, your digestion will reflect that, and you will excrete those bad smells and stink to those around you. Don’t bother trying to mask the odor; find out what is causing it, and treat it.

Crystal Spring: crystal spring

They sell natural deodorants, natural candles (vegan), hair care, massage oil, detox footpads and travel size toiletries

Faith in Nature: Organic, Cruelty-free and Vegan, more about this brand in second part – hair care

http://www.faithinnature.co.uk/Wipes-and-Deodorants/C/6

 SUN CARE :

We all know we get vitamin D naturally from sun exposure to the skin and they say that 10-15 min is enough. It is impossible to generate too much vitamin D in your body from sunlight exposure: your body will self-regulate and only generate what it needs.  There are many vitamin supplements also with vitamin D, but if you are vegan watch out for a vegan version, aka D2.

Low blood levels of the vitamin have been associated with the following:

  • Increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease
  • Cognitive impairment in older adults
  • Severe asthma in children
  • Cancer

Learn more: http://www.naturalnews.com/003069_vitamin_D_deficiency.html#ixzz2ZD3uK7qZ

So we know that vitamin D is important and that the best way to get it is from the sun, but we all know the danger in that too. If you regularly soak up the sun’s rays without proper protection, you could be setting yourself up for serious skin damage. Don’t forget to use sunscreen and reapply every 2 hours and if you go into the water use water resistant one. Use preferably mineral sun blocks (with zinc or titanium). And also protect your eyes with good sunglasses.

So here are some vegan and cruelty free sunscreens:SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

And if you want the color but without the sun here are some sunless tanning options:

Today I had pretty late morning so it was not really morning workout, but more like before lunch workout. So I started week three with Jillian’s and Bob’s workout. It is getting more and more boring doing same workout every week, (specially with J, B is ok cos is short one so I can manage).
